Longwood Community Connections Committee Hosts Another Successful MLK Unity Walk
Post
In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the District’s Community Connections Committee hosted a Unity Walk for more than 500 participants on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Longwood Board of Education members, Superintendent Dr. Lohman, central office, directors, faculty, staff, students, community members, and our local representatives gathered at Coram Elementary School to walk together to the Coram Fire Department, symbolizing diversity, peace, unity, and solidarity.
After introductions by Dr. Vaughn Denton, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services, co-host eighth-grader Canaan Caballero spoke about building a community where everyone is valued and respected and striving for a community that embodies the ideals of justice and equality.
Longwood Board of Education President Victoria Molloy welcomed participants and shared the District’s principles of respect and empathy, fostering an environment where diversity is embraced and celebrated.
“Today, we unite and reflect on Dr. King’s enduring legacy and reaffirm our commitment to his dream of unity, equality, and justice,” said Mrs. Molloy. “Our Annual Unity Walk is a symbolic gesture and a shared journey that continues to support and build an inclusive community.”
During the event, MBK/MSK students performed a powerful and impactful song of resilience. Students read inspiring essays and shared musical performances, with attendees visiting with community organizations and browsing student artwork, honoring various aspects of Dr. King’s principles of non-violence and peace.
