Middle Island

The Carrabus family moved to Middle Island from
Flushing in 1932 and lived on a farm just north of the East Middle
Island School which the children attended. After elementary school
they attended Port Jefferson High School.
Dominic Carrabus was born on August 9,
1917 in Flushing New York .He was the oldest child born to John and
Josephine Carrabus. They moved from Flushing to Middle Island in
1932. The family had a working farm on Yaphank Middle Island Road.
Dominic attended Port Jefferson High School. Besides helping his
parents work their farm his first job was with the New York State
Conservation Department. Before the war he was working at Republic
Aviation in Farmingdale.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force on
September 15, 1942 at Camp Upton. As a Private he spent 16 months
with the 306 Airbase Unit. His next assignment for 12 months was
with the 406th Airbase Unit. Rising to the rank of Staff
Sergeant he was attached to the 94th Air Depot Group.
Dominic’s final assignment would be with the 36th
fighter Group. He was involved
with the engagements at France, Belgium, Germany and the Battle of
the Ardennes, The Rhineland and Central Europe. He would be
discharged on January
6th
1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
After his discharge Dominic and his wife
Josephine settled in Patchogue N.Y. He went to work for the Veterans
Administration and retired from there in 1974. Dominic was an active
member in the Knights of Columbus. He worked tirelessly for years
fund raising for many community projects. Dominic continued those
efforts until his death on October 24, 2004.
